Atta Mills in Volta Region to campaign

14/03/08
THE National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for Election 2008, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, has begun a three-day tour of the Volta Region as part of his nation-wide campaign.
At the Hohoe St Augustine’s School Park, Professor Mills complained about the poor road network still connecting the town, which was said to be the commercial capital of the region.
He called on the people to vote for the NDC, come December, so that it would construct the road to Nkwanta.
He wondered why Hohoe, with all its tourist attractions, would continue to be poor.
“This shall be a prime target of my government if given the mandate,” he said.
He said the Likpe hydro-electric project which had been abandoned would be reactivated.
On the depletion of trees in the forest, he called on the people to consider the use of bamboo to supplement their fuel needs.
Prof Mills noted that politics was about seeking the welfare of the people, not victimising them and amassing wealth.
On the oil find in the country, he prayed that it would be a blessing and not a curse.
He promised teachers that they would be treated well if the NDC government was voted into power.
The National Organiser of the party, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, cautioned constituency branches to ensure that their primaries were held under a peaceful atmosphere.
“We should be seen to be electing people who we feel can help lead the party to success in the elections,” he said.
The NDC flag bearer was expected to address a mammoth rally in Ho yesterday.

Heart of Lions inflicted a 1-0 defeat on RTU in their Onetouch Premiership match at Kpando yesterday to maintain their impressive home record.
The lone goal was scored in the 23rd minute by Emmanuel Banahene following a miskick by RTU goalkeeper, Sulemana Yakubu, from a goal kick.
Hans Kwofie, who was put through a minute earlier by man-of-the-match, Jerry Akaminko, missed target narrowly only for the RTU goalkeeper to present Banahene with that gift of a goal from the resultant goal kick.

CHIEF, EX-POLICEMAN IN COURT FOR SECRET BURIAL (MIRROR, PAGE 27)

From Emmanuel Modey, Hohoe.

THE Chief of Fodome Ahor in the Hohoe District, Togbe Yao Akorli III and an ex-police corporal, Batholomew Adoboe, have appeared before the Hohoe Circuit Court for beating to death one Obed Amevor, 19, and secretly burying him at Fodome Ahor.
Amevor’s crime was soliciting sex from a lady teacher in the town.
Togbe Akorli and Adoboe pleaded not guilty to murder. Adoboe has been remanded in prison custody to assist the police in further investigations while Togbe Akorli has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢10, 000.
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Samuel Gbedema said the deceased, Amevor, had been given several warnings to desist from his behaviour but he refused to heed the warnings.
Chief Inspector Gbedema said on February 8, 2008 after one such amorous demand, Adoboe ordered the youth of the town to arrest the deceased.
After the arrest, Adoboe ordered that Amevor be tied up and this was undertaken by the chief and three others yet to be arrested.
After being tied up, Amevor was violently beaten up.
The prosecutor said the chief then demanded three bottles of Akpeteshie before the release of Amevor after which he was to leave the town.
After Amevor’s mother produced the drinks, the deceased was released with the order that he should be taken to a prayer camp.
On February 16, at the prayer camp at Ahor, Amevor died and was secretly buried on February 18 without the knowledge of the police, but an informant gave a tip-off to the police at Hohoe.
