WORK ON HOHOE TOWN ROADS PROGRESSING (PAGE 39)

WORK is progressing on the Hohoe town roads. At the moment, the 1.6 kilometre highway through the town has been tarred.
As part of the project, the 300-metre road linking Agodome with Zongo has received first dressing while the 1.8-kilometre drainage system from the Bank of Ghana to the St Francis College of Education is also progressing steadily.
According to the Volta Regional Engineer of the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA), Mr Steven Blay, he had examined the chippings used in the road construction and found them to be of good quality.
The Managing Director of Survivals Construction Work, Mr Dela Castro-Ahorsu, who is executing the project said the GH¢1,170 project would be completed on schedule.

BEST FARMER DONATES TO ORPHANAGE (PAGE 40)

THE 2007 best maize farmer in the Hohoe Municipality, Mr Valentine Confidence Fiah-Tse has donated a quantity of items valued at GH¢500 to the House of Hope Orphanage at Gbikledzo, near Hohoe.
The items included bags of maize, rice, sugar, gallons of cooking oil, biscuits and assorted toilet facilities.
Presenting the items, Mr Fiah-Tse, who is also the Senior Accountant of the Hohoe Municipal Hospital, said the donation was part of his annual contribution towards the upkeep of needy children and institutions.
He expressed the hope that the items would be judiciously used for the benefit of the children.
Receiving the items, the mother of the orphanage, Madam Elizabeth Kusi Mensah was grateful to the donor for the gesture.

FIRE OUTBREAKS DESTROYED GH¢526,550 PROPERTY...In VR in 2008 (PAGE 40)

THE Volta Region recorded a total of 84 fire outbreaks last year resulting in the loss of two lives and destruction of property worth GH¢526,550.
Bush fires topped the list of disasters with 42 incidents, which destroyed property valued at GH¢11,500.
A total of 33 domestic fires caused destruction of property estimated at GH¢186,950 while seven vehicular fires and two electrical fires destroyed various items worth GH¢161,500 and GH¢12,000 respectively.
The Assistant Chief Fire Officer in charge of the Volta Region, Mr Eric Tei-Mensah, made this known at a meeting between the Chief Fire Officer (CFO) , Mr F.K. Ferkah and personnel of the Volta regional fire command in Ho.
Mr Tei- Mensah said there were two deaths involving a 40-year old woman and her three-year-old daughter in Ho.
He spoke of the deplorable state of the fire stations in the region and their equipment.
According to Mr Tei-Mensah, only three out of the 13 fire stations in the region, namely, Hohoe, Ho and Nkwanta had permanent structures while the 10 remaining were on rented premises.
He said with the creation of five more administrative districts in the region, namely Kpeve, Adaklu-Anyigbe, Kpassa, Dambai and Penyi, there was the need to open fire stations in those areas.
The regional fire officer said the staff strength of 306 in the entire region was woefully inadequate.
He noted that staff accommodation was virtually non-existent, adding that the construction of three flats which began in 1986 at the regional headquarters was at a standstill.
Mr Ferkah decried the inability of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Council to interact with the personnel in the region as it had been doing in the other regions.
He, however, stressed that the new administration would continue to provide the necessary support to enable the service to stand up to its challenges.
Mr Ferkah gave the assurance that the service would take delivery of new fire engines purchased with loans approved by Parliament and the Cabinet.
He reiterated the need for the personnel to intensify fire safety education campaign by going to the churches, mosques, schools and business centres as a measure of minimising the incidence of fire outbreaks in the region.
The chief fire officer emphasised the need for the personnel to sensitise the general public to Fire Precaution Regulation 2003 (LI1724), adding that they must also strive to improve on their internally generated funds targets.
He warned that his administration would not tolerate any acts of indiscipline by any staff member and therefore, urged them not only to work hard, but must also be punctual.
Mr Ferkah commended the personnel in the Volta Region for providing the best squad at the National Extrication Challenge, who later represented the country at the World Extrication Challenge in the United Kingdom in July, last year.
He said their performance was so impressive that it won them a plaque.

USE STRIKES LOCKOUTS JUDICIOUSLY (PAGE 35)

From Emmanuel Modey, Ho

Workers and Management have been advised to use the options of strikes and lockouts judiciously in order not to engender hardships to themselves or work places.
At a two–day seminar on the labour Act 2003 organised by the Ghana Employer’s Association (GEA)at Ho, the Project Manager of GEA, Mr Charles Asante Bempong, urged workers to use strikes and lockouts as the last resorts after passing through all the laid down avenues to seek redress.
The seminar sought to build the capacity of employers and employees in the labour Act 2003 and facilitate an atmosphere of friendly cooperation and mutual understanding at the enterprise level.
Mr Asante Bempong said unfortunately, negotiations are often carried out in an atmosphere of tension and strikes, thus preventing the full utilisation of the communication potentials.
He said the labour Act 2003 affords management the opportunity to explain managerial positions to workers but unfortunately, many management and union staff come to the bargaining table with their minds made up and not in the mood to consider the view points of each other.
Mr Asante Bempong said such misunderstanding of the labour Act results in disharmony and industrial dispute at the enterprise level adding that, "a compromise can resolve only in partial fulfilment of the needs of each party".
"While both parties may emerge completely satisfied or one party may be clearly dissatisfied under this mood, both could at least come to terms to resolve the most immediate issue", he said.
However, he said due to inadequate knowledge and understanding of the law, employee/employer relationship was being seriously eroded, bringing about low morale, low productivity, industrial strikes and lockouts.
On his part, the facilitator of the programme, Mr Joseph Amuah observed that the National Labour Commission recorded 60 labour complaints on monthly basis last year with some misunderstanding leading to serious strike actions.
" A proper understanding of the labour Act”, he said would prevent such strike actions which sometimes become violent and bloody, resulting in loss of lives and property.

CHURCH RAISES GH¢60,000 TO FUND GUEST HOUSE (PAGE 22)

THE Klefe Evangelical Presbyterian Church has realised more than GH¢60,000 at a fund-raising ceremony to climax the centenary celebrations held at Klefe Kpodzi in the Ho Municipality.
The money would be used for the completion of the church’s centenary guest house.
Preaching the sermon on the theme: “I Shall Not Die but Live and Proclaim the Work of the Lord,” the Moderator of the EP Church Ghana, Rt Rev Dr Livingstone Komla Buama, a citizen of the town, said the church was established at Klefe about 100 years ago.
He said with hard work and dedication over the years, Christianity and education were deeply rooted in the area and the result was the production of many prominent people including bankers, doctors, lawyers, military and police officers.
Rt Rev Buama stressed the need for the youth to worship God in sincerity to protect them against poverty, drugs and alcohol abuse, irresponsible parenthood and sexual promiscuity.
For his part, the former moderator of the church, Very Rev J.Y. Ledo, called on Christians to have confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ and also love one another and in truth.
“It is by so doing that our proclamation of the works of the Lord will rise up to him,” he said.
Earlier in a welcoming address, the Fiaga of Klefe Traditional Area, Togbe Afele Dzaga X, was happy about the peaceful co-existence of the 10 Christian churches in the town.
He noted that the celebration should mark a new vision for strengthening their Christian values and morals.
“We should do away with outmoded customs, reduce ignorance and poverty and make Klefe a place of peace and development and progress,” Togbe Dzaga said.
He called for the establishment of an education endowment fund to support brilliant, needy children in the area.

52 STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM ASOGLI EDUCATION FUND (PAGE 11, JAN 23)

FIFTY-TWO needy students in the Ho Municipality are benefiting from a GH¢12,911.20 scholarship scheme by the Asogli Education Fund.
The scholarship will enable the students to continue their education to institutions of higher learning in the country.
Thirty of the students will proceed to the polytechnic and university levels, while 22 students will continue to the junior and senior high school levels, as well as technical and vocational institutions.
This was contained in a release issued last Monday and signed by Mr John Kokah, Secretary of the Asogli Education Fund.
The assistance to the students was made possible in fulfilment of a promise made at last year’s Asogli Yam Festival by the Agbogbomefia, Togbe Afede XIV, to support the fund.
According to the release, 35 of the beneficiaries have already received their cheques worth GH¢8,317.00 whilst the remaining 17 will receive theirs totalling GH¢4,594.20 by the end of January, 2009.
The release said Togbe Afede used the opportunity to advise the students to justify the investment made in their education by studying hard to attain good results, adding that on completion of their courses, they should group themselves into a formidable Asogli Scholars Union to mobilise funds to assist their younger brothers and sisters.
He commended the donors of the amount and hoped that this would facilitate the attainment of the fund’s objective of raising the standard of education in the area and the region as a whole.

SANTROKOFI BUME RAISES FUNDS FOR DEVELOPMENT (PAGE 20)

THE chiefs and people of Santrokofi Bume in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region have used their homecoming event to raise funds for community development projects in the town.
At their second homecoming event held at Bume during the Christmas festivities, the people realised GH¢8,000.00 to complete a two- unit nurses quarters.
During the first homecoming event in 2005, they raised money to complete their junior high school block for the community.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Santrokofi Bume Development Association (SABUDA), Mr Christian Kedze, said in the light of the success of the homecoming activities, they had decided to celebrate it annually to raise funds for community-based development projects.
The guest of honour, Mr Prince Jacob Hayibor, who is the Member of Parliament for Hohoe North, commended the people for their foresight in raising funds to finance development projects.
He expressed the wish that other communities would take a cue from the efforts of the community and stop relying on the government to provide their needs.
Mr Hayibor expressed satisfaction that the people had focused on education and health to justify the huge investment and for a bright future.
He further advised parents to be responsible and invest in their children's education instead of organising grand funerals.
The Paramount Chief of the Santrokofi Traditional Area, Nana Letsabi I, praised the Bume community for their commitment and high sense of discipline and called on the executive of the SABUDA to demonstrate transparency and truth in their dealings at all times to build confidence and trust in the people.
For his part, the Adontehene of the Santrokofi Traditional Area, Nana Kwaku Otitiaku III, placed emphasis on unity and urged those who were not members of the SABUDA to try and join the association since it was there for them.
A retired British teacher, Ms Elizabeth Martell, who is contributing towards child development projects in the municipality was installed the Nkosuohemaa of Bume under the stool name of Mama Dansua I.
